A$AP Rocky’s attorney, Joseph Tacopina, has characterized the evidence in his client’s ongoing gun case as “fundamentally weak,” expressing confidence in a favorable outcome for the rapper.

Rocky, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, was arrested in April 2022 in connection with a November 2021 shooting in Los Angeles. He faces accusations of firing a semiautomatic firearm at Terell Ephron, formerly known as ASAP Relli. Rocky has pleaded not guilty to two counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, including allegations of personally using the weapon.

Speaking outside the courthouse on Wednesday, Tacopina addressed reporters after Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Mark S. Arnold set jury selection to begin the following Tuesday. Prosecutors announced plans to present a final plea deal, but Tacopina made it clear that Rocky was unlikely to accept any agreement.

“He’s eager to share his side of the story,” Tacopina told Rolling Stone’s Nancy Dillon. “He’s intelligent, articulate, and a good human being. If he testifies, that will come through. But the decision to testify will depend on how the trial unfolds.”

During a 2023 preliminary hearing, surveillance footage of an altercation between Rocky and Ephron near a parking garage was reportedly shown in court. However, the video did not capture the alleged shooting. LAPD detective Frank Flores testified that the footage provided “nothing clear” regarding the incident.

Tacopina highlighted the absence of physical evidence, stating, “There’s a reason why a thorough search by ten police officers didn’t uncover any shell casings. It’s not because they were careless. It’s because there weren’t any to find.”

Tacopina emphasized Rocky’s determination to proceed with the trial, describing him as “confident and ready.” He added, “He believes in justice and trusts that the truth will prevail. This case is built on testimony from individuals who lack credibility. The defense is exceptionally strong.”

The attorney also addressed efforts to shield Rocky’s partner, Rihanna, from the trial’s proceedings.

“Rocky is very protective of Rihanna and prefers to keep her away from this matter,” Tacopina said, adding that the decision ultimately rests with the family.
